About Susan
Susan's Calico Creations opened April 5, 2002. The owner, Susan May, is a retired math instructor, who began a teaching career in Arkansas and retired from the college curriculum in Moline, IL before starting this second career.
Owning a quilt store became her dream come true when she purchased an existing shop in Fulton, IL, which had been closed for a short time.
About the Shop
Baby cribs filled with bolts of fabric have become a unique symbol for the shop in its 4000 square foot quilting display area. The 2000 bolts range in type from rich orientals and batiks, to Moda marbles, backgrounds, 1930's reproductions, all sizes of florals, juvenile prints, homespuns and luscious flannels. Separate rooms are filled with hundreds of the newest books and patterns.
Wonderful quilts for display are hanging from the 14' tall ceilings and along the walls. Most of these quilts are samples from the newest books or patterns and are taught in the numerous classes. The shop provides instructors that vary their innovative offerings from Beginner Log Cabin to paper piecing, hand applique, machine quilting, and special Clubs. The classes are taught in the spacious 2000 square feet classroom, which can accommodate up to 25 quilters. Each sewing station has a flannel board for quilt layout and display. There are numerous large tables available at anytime for quilt basting.
